Nevada business taxes: Modified Business Tax and Commerce Tax

Nevada has no personal income tax, but businesses can still have Nevada tax filing duties.

The Modified Business Tax (MBT) is tied to wages paid by employers. Employers generally file quarterly MBT returns even when no tax is due, and financial institutions and mining businesses have different categories.

The Commerce Tax applies to businesses whose Nevada gross revenue exceeds $4 million in a fiscal year. It is measured by gross revenue, not profit or income.

Sales and use tax and other industry taxes may also apply depending on what you sell. Rates and rules change, so use the Department of Taxation's current pages rather than older summaries.

Checklist

  • Register with the Department of Taxation when hiring or selling taxable goods
  • Calendar quarterly MBT returns once you have employees
  • Track Nevada gross revenue for the Commerce Tax threshold
  • Check current rates on official pages each year
